About this app
This app packs the original hex-tile board game and the two-player card game into one client: build roads, found settlements, upgrade to cities, roll dice, move the robber, and haggle trades with real humans or the AI. You can play the basic three-player board setup for free, or buy the basegame and expansions (Seafarers, Cities & Knights, plus special scenarios like Enchanted Land and The Great Canal) for larger tables and more variety. Quick how-to: start a match, pick a map, place two starting settlements and roads, roll, collect resources, trade (or don't), build. If that made zero sense—there's a step-by-step tutorial that actually helps. No, seriously—use it. "Hey, you want wood?" "Only for a sheep and a promise." (Chat exists. Players chat. Sometimes rude. Sometimes hilarious.) The Duel (aka Rivals for Catan) is included too: a slim, smart 2-player card duel that’s free in its intro form; buy full card sets if you want more decks and AI opponents. Account sync works across phone and desktop, so your profile, avatar, guild memberships and season progress travel with you. Seasons, achievements, and cosmetic avatar gear add long-term goals; the game uses a suns system (yellow suns recharge over time; red suns are rarer and tied to challenge rewards) to gate some solo matches against the AI. This isn't a sterile port. You’ll get animations, sound cues, and a lobby system with matchmaking and guild chat. But—don’t expect every expansion to be free, and don’t expect instant matchmaking at all hours. If you like face-to-face bargaining, plotting long trades, and watching a cunning road placement ruin your plan, this app nails that feeling. If you want immediate everything, well… not so fast. Pause. Think about whether you want to grind challenges to earn premium playtime or simply pay for the expansions and be done with it. Minimum Android version listed: 4.4 (check your device). Editor's Review
I’ve been hopping into Catan Universe late at night more than I care to admit. I lost track of time—twice—because someone on turn three pulled off a trade that made me furious (in a good way). I’m not kidding: I sat there, controller—no, phone—sweaty in my palm, wondering if I should delete the app or tip the player for the lesson. The app mostly nails the board-game logic. Resource dice, robber shenanigans, longest road spats—it's all here. The tutorial is actually helpful. The AI? Functional for practice, but don’t expect genius-level bluffs. The card-game mode is a neat palate cleanser when you want a quick duel. That said, there are rough edges. Matchmaking can take too long at odd hours. Expansions behind paywalls feel... expected, but annoying (you can grind suns, sure—if you have time). Some UI dialogs are cluttered and I had to squint to find a trade button mid-game. Small bugs pop up: a frozen chat here, a stuck avatar animation there. Not fatal. Not great. "Trade 2 brick for 1 ore?" a player typed. I typed back: "Nope. Not today." (Yes, the trash talk is part of the charm.) Bottom line: play this if you love the physical game and want it in your pocket or browser. Don’t play it if you expect everything unlocked for free or lightning-fast matchmaking at 3 a.m. It’s lovable, flawed, and more fun than it should be for a board-game app—especially when you win a revenge road and laugh out loud in your living room. Or cry. Depends on the night.
