About this app

Shattered Pixel Dungeon is a down-to-earth, old-school roguelike that refuses to hold your hand. You pick one of six heroes — Warrior, Duelist, Mage, Cleric, Rogue, Huntress — and you get dropped into twisty, randomly-made floors where every item, trap, and enemy can matter. The controls are simple: move, attack, use an item. But don’t be fooled. Simple does not mean easy. This isn’t a casual stroll. It’s a slow, delicious train wreck you’ll replay again and again. Short run. Long memory. You’ll find weapons to enchant, armor to upgrade, and wands, rings, and trinkets that change how you play. Some runs you’ll snipe from the shadows. Others you’ll charge like a lunatic and regret it five steps later. There’s alchemy for crafting consumables, a talent tree for tuning your build, and subclasses that turn familiar heroes into weird, fun variants (Duelist to Champion? Yes. Cleric to Paladin? Also yes). The map generator mixes rooms and traps in a way that keeps you guessing — and it throws in a boss or two when you least expect it. “Try the Rogue, you’ll like it.” “Yeah, I died on floor six.” Pause. Then try again. That’s the point. The game updates regularly (roughly quarterly), so the checklist of items, enemies, and rooms keeps growing. The community that supports the open-source project is active; that means translations, bug fixes, and sometimes wild new toys. If you like games where you learn by making mistakes — real, facepalm mistakes — this one speaks your language. Target players: folks who enjoy tight, methodical combat, inventory puzzles, and the satisfaction of finally beating a boss after many tries. Not for players who want a hand-holding tutorial or a five-minute arcade session. This is deliberate. It’s crunchy. And occasionally, it makes you laugh out loud at the absurdity of a run gone sideways.

Editor's Review

I’ve spent dozens of late-night runs with this one. I laughed. I cursed. I emptied a bag of chips in a single tense fight. I admit it: I was stuck on the third area for two hours once — no exaggeration — because a cursed ring and bad RNG teamed up to ruin my day. My thumb cramped. My brain screamed. Then I won a run that felt earned in my bones. The tile art is charmingly grumpy. The sound design is minimal but effective — little bleeps that mean you messed up or did something clever. I like that the game respects your time: runs end fast when you die, and you often learn something new each time. But don’t expect modern tutorials or micromanagement helpers. This isn’t a slider-based life-simulator. It’s mechanics-first. And that’s good — mostly. Criticism? Sure. The UI can feel tight on small phones (there are modes, but still). Some item descriptions assume prior knowledge, so newcomers will squint. Also, the difficulty curve can spike in ways that feel unlucky rather than fair. “Why didn’t you tell me that would explode?” “Because I didn’t know.” Bottom line: if you like permadeath, clever item combos, and the thrill of learning by failure, this will eat your nights. If you want a slow, forgiving experience, look elsewhere. I still keep coming back — partly out of spite, partly because the game rewards stubbornness.

Pros

  • Deep item interactions — enchantments and alchemy create unexpected combos
  • Six distinct heroes with meaningful subclass choices and talents
  • Regular updates and a strong open-source community adding content

Cons

  • Steep learning curve; some mechanics are explained sparsely
  • UI can feel cramped on smaller screens despite layout modes
  • Random spikes in difficulty sometimes feel more punishing than fair
