About this app
Evony: The King’s Return pins together base-building, alliance politics, and a weird-but-fun shooter/puzzle side mode into one phone-sized obsession. You build a city, upgrade buildings, train four troop types, and then either snipe a neighbor at dawn or log off feeling emotionally bankrupt—depending on your alliance. Start by choosing one of seven civilization styles (American, Chinese, European, Russian, Korean, Arabia, Japanese). That’s not just skins—your city actually looks different. You’ll research tech, assign governors, and recruit historical generals (yes, Julius Caesar shows up) to buff troops and speed production. Play loop: gather resources → upgrade → train → scout → attack. Repeat. But there’s more: the game sneaks in “Survivor” levels where you move, dodge, shoot and evolve weapons (it’s janky, but weirdly addictive). Controls are finger-friendly—until you’re under siege and nothing is finger-friendly. “Should I go full offense or turtle?” "Both. And blame me later." — real talk from my late-night alliance chat. This isn’t a casual tap-and-watch. Expect diplomacy—trade, voice/text with auto-translation, and alliance events that require coordination. Don’t expect to win every fight by spending cash (yet many players will tell you otherwise); the paywall shows its face in late-game speedups and VIP perks. Pause. I spent two sleepless hours trying a Survivor stage and then got steamrolled in a night raid. That felt stupid and brilliant at the same time. Target audience: players who like social strategy, long-term progression, and history-flavored hero collecting. If you hate timers, or your free time is a single 10-minute slot, this might frustrate you. If you like plotting with a guild at 2 a.m. and celebrating a successful rally with memes—welcome. Note: Free-to-play with optional purchases. Players must be 13+. If you want fewer microtransactions, disable in-app purchases in device settings.
Editor's Review
I’ve been poking this thing at odd hours for weeks. I’ll be blunt: Evony is equal parts satisfying base micromanagement and infuriating grind. I watched my city go from a handful of huts to a sprawl that looked suspiciously like chaos—then celebrated with my alliance (we cheered like idiots). The game’s strength is social: voice chat with auto-translate works more often than not, and coordinated rallies feel glorious when they land. But. There’s a but. The late game leans hard on paid shortcuts. Don’t expect to cruise past endgame without either patience or dollars. Also, tutorial tips sometimes lie—okay, not lie, they omit crucial timing details (so I died a lot). I got trapped on a survivor level for two hours. My thumbs were sore. My dignity? Questionable. "We take the western node now." "On my way—wait, wrong march." — a quote from my worst raid ever. Still, I kept coming back. The animation of real-time battles on the world map? Nice. Recruiting historical generals? Fun fan-service. Is it perfect? Nope. But if you enjoy plotting, alliances, and occasional frantic shooter rounds, Evony scratches an itch most mobile strategy games ignore. I’d recommend it—with a warning: be ready to argue with strangers (and occasionally pay) if you want to be top dog.
